“The art of listening is important and not simply focusing on what our reply is going to be.”
Interview with Michael Bungay Stanier, author of ‘Say Less, Ask More, & Change the Way you Lead’.
Ask a question and sit and think and feel. We spend a lifetime being the person with the answer, and to reconnect to that slightly uncomfortable place, and ask a question, then listen to the answer. Get comfortable with silence.
As a mediator, I believe in contemplation. If you ask a great question the person is silent for a moment because you’re asking them think. Silence allows a person to think and see what emerges from that thinking.
In those moments of silence there are a lot of things that we can attend to, but the contemplation has been lost in today’s world. There is so much left unsaid, we don’t have enough time.
